While there are few real laugh-out-loud moments, "Be Kind Rewind" manages an offbeat charm. Even Jack Black seems to have toned down his usual brash persona here. It's as much about the invention of history as it is the invention of movies (Sweded or otherwise). Everything has its place in history and then becomes just a memory, whether its a technology (VHS) or a person (Fats Waller) or even the character of a neighborhood. We can cling to the past or we can reinvent it, and our reinventions are usually better (hence the "Sweded" movies). A good cast and a good story, though the metaphor about putting on a show to save the whatever has been done so much it's a cliche. Worth a watch.

The story had great potential, but his characteristic zaniness was too distracting. I agree with others that the beginning moved too slowly. It's hard to even mention Eternal Sunshine or Science of Sleep in the same sentence with this movie; it doesn't hold a candle.

I liked this wacked out heartwarming comedy set in Passiac N.J. from the director/writer of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. Im being honest by saying that many will find this too weird and will give it two stars at best. I was in a bad mood when I popped the dvd in but watched the entire thing and as the credits rolled I felt good again. Not everyone will agree and if you think this is a mainstream comedy with Jack Black, all I can say is that this is a very different type of film Jack has done before. This is not in the same category as Eternal is but I give it alot of credit for having an orginal concept and having lots of heart. I was surprised how touching Be Kind was. I won't recommend this to many friends since I know there taste but if you don't mind taking risks with movies and want to see something set in the corner of Jersey with some colorful characters and a dreamlike script then watch this unheard of movie which might one day become a cult classic with the late night pot-smokers.

Be Kind Rewind is a good Michel Gondry film. It takes steps to be more appealing to people than his previous works. It still strikes a weird chord at times - I can't figure out why though. Melonie Diaz is such a cutie pie in it, you'll wish she had shown up sooner in the film. I wavered on my rating, but I found the ending to be moving - even though it is a little cliched. I can't tell if Gondry wants his films to have wider audiences or not, but at least it seems that way to me... I like his work so far.

It may have been the sour mood I was in when watching, but I hated this film. The characters and situations are such total contrivances that they bear no relation to life on planet earth. "Be Kind Rewind" is so painfully silly and sentimentalized that you too might have to lean heavily on the fast-forward button to get through it. The plot demands that accidentally erasaed videotapes of hit movies need to be recreated via new footage, and some of the low-rent ways the characters attempt this task are imaginative, but it just isn't enough to provide much interest.
