I initially turned away from this movie for it's lack of any real gore and the fact that I'm really more of a horror buff. However, it's hard to ignore all the glowing praise this movie has recieved, and boy does it deserve it! This movie works both as a sit-back-and-relax flick for all the violence and cunning going on, but it's also a thinker. It makes you take a closer look at yourself and your government. What are they willing to do to you, and what are you willing to do to survive? Definitely an essential film!!

This one puts me on the spot. Like some others, I have grown disenchanted with the work of Quentin Tarentino, and have said so. (Maybe "Inglourious Basterds" will redeem him when I finally see it.) But this Japanese movie, while ultimately truly unique on its own, clearly shows his influence (among others): the big, operatic music and opening titles, the violence of course, and the general sense of mayhem. Even if this is far more than a bloodbath, there is no way I would let any 16 year old of mine---those most dying, so to speak, to see it---anywhere near it. But it is a wild roar of a movie, it cannot be denied. Yes, it does take teen angst fantasies to a pseudo-gothic level: shedding a few tears over cliques in the 9th grade rest room becomes anguished battle-island cries of "But I don't even understand what it means!" (Welcome to the world, kiddo.) It is a bit of "Lord of the Flies," "1984," and Shirley Jackson's classic story of horror intruding on ordinary middle-class life, "The Lottery." Not for sure bravado alone, I finally had to admit there was something to this, but if I have taken the first step into the abyss because I have tolerated its sanguinary excesses, I am willing to hear the objections to it. I felt there was enough thoughtful and entertaining material to overcome that part. Otherwise, this very interesting recent semi-American-flavored foreign film, unrated, would likely deserve an NC-17 rating. Somewhere between 2.6 to 4.3 stars. (That's 3.45 stars in simple arithmetic, I guess. Did I pass math? Don't send me to the island!) 11.09

I own a copy of this film and it is a really fantastic, disturbing concept.
The story involves schoolchildren who are constantly pitted against one another by their parents and school to kill one another in a game that is a million times more brutal than that "survivor" show.
All of the children are divided into groups of two. Each pair has explosive collars on their necks and if the two are separated (by distance or death) they will explode. Anyone who goes outside of the boundaries listed on their maps also are immediately eliminated.
There are almost no recognizable names in this movie except for Chiaki Kuriyama (memorable as the deadly mace-wielding schoolgirl from Kill Bill Vol 1) and Takeshi "Beat" Kitano, who is one of the best Asian actors I have ever watched. Kitano plays the most heartless, cruel teacher you would ever meet and Kuriyami is one of the students. Kuriyama is not the star, but she has a scene that shows you why Tarantino cast her in "Kill Bill."
At the very least, I think that this will appeal to you like any cult film would. At best, this movie will stay in your mind as a classic flick.
If you are interested, there is a sequel, but it is nowhere near as good as the original.

On hearing the plot summary, you would think this would be just a shallow shoot 'em up, and although I can get behind shallow shoot 'em ups, this film by Fukasaku (my first) may have gotten me on board on as a fan. First, "Battle Royale" is bloody, but in that manga/anime kind of way, so get over it. Second, what lies beneath is the theme of what binds us together when all are forced against all, to the death. The dystopian themes hardly matter except in initializing the plot. Friendship and loyalty are played against resentment and revenge. Imagine all the adolescent awkwardness, boon companions, helpless crushes, unrequited love, betrayals, tentative trust, petty competitions and rivalry of high school cranked up into a running question of what matters when only one of you can survive. Should you live and act in accordance with the rules of the Battle Royale, or is there some way to transcend the game? Give "Battle Royale" a try, and in the meantime I'm off to watch more Fukasaku
