Bad Day at Black Rock, 1955

Long, pretentious, "stagey", pseudo-artsy, dull...just a few of the descriptors that come to mind in describing this crashingly boring exercise in film-making. Given the acting talent, director John Sturges' ghost should be ashamed. This flick is a real time-waster, and I do not say that about many films.

This starts off so well in my opinion and then gets a little lost near the end, but don't hold that against it. I found the beginning very good, almost like a scene from Hitchcock - a train stops in the middle of nowhere and a single man gets off. From that point on, you wonder who he is, why is he there and why are the town people suspicous. The rest of the movie plays it out slowly and with little overt fanfare, which is good compared to our current era of mandatory explosions and action. However, the end gets tied up a bit neatly and unrealistic. For the day and the topic, I'm still very impressed with the film and the acting.
