Audition, 2000

Audition is maybe the most famous Japanese film after Ringu and Ju-on: the Grudge. It's also probably Takashi Miike's least gory film, but also one of the most memorable. Audition is all about the slow (VERY slow) build up of tension. Through the first 70-80 minutes you slowly get the feeling that something REALLY bad is going to happen...and then it does. The shinning star of this film is the attractive, quiet, and very disturbed Yamazaki Asami (played by an impeccable Eihi Shiina in her first ever film role). You really feel for this poor girl who's basically being used by the male lead (Ryo Ishibashi), but then the tables turn and you're both horrified and entranced by the glee she takes in torturing this man in the most horrific manner possible. All around great fun if you can sit through the slower-than-snail-like pace and don't mind sharp object where sharp objects really shouldn't be. NOT for the faint of heart and a must for Asian extremists.
