When helplessly innocent and guilty at the same time
A story of false witness with either bad or not any more innocent intent which goes awry. The perpetrator struggling a full life of being unable to repair the damage she has brought and desperately attempting to atone for her lie by telling, re-telling and possibly re-inventing her story.

CONTAINS SPOILERS... Briony Tallis, 13 years old and an aspiring writer, sees her older sister Cecilia and Robbie Turner at the fountain in front of the family estate she misinterprets what is happening thus setting into motion a series of misunderstandings that will have lasting effects for all concerned. Robbie is the son of a family servant toward whom the family has always embraced as part of the family. They paid for his time at Cambridge and now he plans on going to medical school. After the fountain incident, Briony reads a letter intended for Cecilia and concludes that Robbie is a deviant. When her cousin Lola is raped, she tells the police that it was Robbie she saw committing the deed when in fact it was a wealthy visitor to the estate. Do not see this film if you like fast paced films and rapid plot development! This is not a film for the pop video generation. If however you like character development and a plot that unravels at a pace that allows you to be immersed in the atmosphere of the film then I can highly recommend Atonement as one of the best films that I have seen. A Well deserved 5.0 STARS

As I ruminated on my reaction to this movie, I thought of "Dr. Zhivago" which is loved by many (including me, I will admit), but has also been criticized for its self-conscious artfulness by director David Lean (and, in the background, the methodically plotted poetry sourced from the original Russian novel of the late 1950s). Yet I still think of it with great pleasure, and that makes me feel more generous to "Atonement" which also struck me as a little contrived, careful, scrupulously well-balanced in its plotting and tone -- to the point of being mechanical. But why not? It does not have the great star turns of "Zhivago" -- or its evocative sense of history, but it is well-modulated artistry which does struggle, albeit mostly successfully, to transcend mere high competence. It is sharply, sometimes almost bitingly, done, quite beautiful to look at, and in its updated way -- both slightly colder about casual human cruelty, yet with a retained yearning for transcendence -- some sort of representative romantic statement of our era. Enjoy it for that slightly florid dramatic appeal swirling out of the feinted (or real) new psychological astringency.

When a film can make you feel for the characters then that's a good flick.

If you don't like period pieces (like me) you'll be bored to tears through most of this film. Persevere to the ending and you'll get a treat, though.

The cinematography was beautiful. It was as pretty as a picture on a wall. Rape and war never looked better - and there's the rub. What was horrifying in the book was good looking on screen, but without any depth or heart or soul. There was no room for anyone to act; all they had to do was pose, either in silhouette or facing the camera, and look wistful.
I loved the book, but was increasingly irritated by the movie as the minutes slowly dragged by. I quit half way.

When new movies come out, I strive to know as little about them as possible so that I can watch them with a blank slate. Sometimes this works and oftentimes not. With Atonement, all I knew was that it won an oscar or two, it looked like a sweeping romance movie and there was supposedly a twist. All of this is true but I wasnt expecting such a devastating story to go along with it. For being over two hours long, it moved swiftly so that I never got bored and for a romance movie, thats quite a feat. The last 1o minutes felt rather rushed and almost detached from the rest of the movie.
This movie definitely fits the descriptor of sweeping and is well worth a watch. Guys, watch this one with your woman, you can show her your sensitive side and still enjoy the movie. Win-win.

This film can be summed up in one word: OVERHYPED. You are going to hear a bunch about how this film is nominated for seven Oscars; big deal, Transformers was nominated for three Oscars the same year. Most of these Oscars are technical Oscars which are all well and good but the main performances are not what are getting nominated. The fact of the matter is the performances are flat and uninspired. The funny thing is the basic premise of a child being vindictive and wrecking someone's life is a workable. The elements of class antagonism that exist in the beginning of the film are really quite interesting. Regrettably, once we get into the World War Two sequences begin all those interesting things are jettisoned in an attempt to become a historical epic. Essentially this film is trying to be two things and ends up being rather average at both. Try this watch Joe Wright's version of "Pride and Prejudice" and then watch "Days of Glory" you can get a better Keira Knightly performance and a better World War Two movie as well.
