Summary of At Play in the Fields of the Lord
At Play in the Fields of the Lord is director Hector Babenco's mesmerizing, episodic tale of two couple's life-changing experiences with a native Indian tribe deep in the Brazilian rainforest, based on the best-selling novel by Peter Matthiessen. First-time missionaries Martin (Aidan Quinn) and Hazel Quarrier (Kathy Bates) travel to a small town in the middle of the Brazilian jungle in order to convert the natives. Upon their arrival they meet Leslie (John Lithgow) and Andy Huben (Daryl Hannah), a more experienced missionary couple, who lead the American Evangelical Society. As the Quarriers set out for their remote and possibly dangerous mission outpost, they face the native Niaruna Indian tribe and find themselves deeply immersed in the foreign world of the jungle natives. This chilling journey of self-discovery also follows two mercenaries--half-Cheyenne Lewis Moon (Tom Berenger) and his assistant, Wolf (musician Tom Waits), who have been employed by the Brazilian government to destroy the rainforest and drive the Indians off their land. Through their contact with the native people and their growing appreciation for the unspoiled environment, Martin and Lewis find themselves questioning long-held beliefs and their assignments while Hazel and Leslie descend into madness and conflict. This visually stunning, cautionary tale was filmed on location in the Brazilian rainforest and features beautiful imagery of the deeply mysterious surroundings.
