I've been wanting to see this remake of John Carpenter's cult classic since I first saw the trailers. The cast alone intrigued me. The new version of Assault on Precinct 13 didn't disappoint. Sure, it was full of inconsistencies and plot holes, but once you get past the surface flaws you'll find a pretty decent action flick underneath.
Yes, the entire plot was a little silly, and the execution of the assault is almost laughable, but it makes for an entertaining movie. The acting performances were, for the most part, fairly solid. Most of the characters played on well-known stereotypes, but Assault on Precinct 13 isn't meant to be a character drama. The action sequences were fast paced and supercharged. This was the closest thing I've seen to a 90's action movie that I've seen since, well, the 90's. The plot was simple but serviceable, the characters were enjoyable but disposable, and the explosion were loud and frequent.
Speaking of explosion, the DTS track on the DVD was great. When the action heated up, so did the mix. Discrete effects bounced around from one speaker to the next with the surrounds getting plenty of fantastic use. The LFE really kicked in when needed, providing some deep and tight bass. Even during the busiest of action sequences, the dialogue was clean and undistorted. Likewise, the video transfer looked great. Most of the movie was very dark, and the DVD recreated the scenes quite well. Detail levels were high and the black levels were rock solid. I noticed only slight pixelation during some of the foggiest scenes, but other than that the transfer was spotless.
But, minor complaints aside, I really enjoyed Assault on Precinct 13. It was a fun action movie with some nice shootouts and a few decent characters.
