This movie severely lacked a focused plot or story and there was absolutely no point or reason in any of the characters' decisions or what happened to them. As a result we didn't really care about what happened in the story because it was mostly arbitrary anyway. At the end of the movie, we were left wondering what the point of any of it was. I really think that this movie was made because a few A-list actors signed on, but there was no script, so it's just a mash-up of scenes for them to prance around in.... a shameful waste of time and energy. On the upside, I thought the gunfighting was the best I've seen in any western because it seemed realistically cold: no over-the-top gunshot sounds or blood or sappy staggering.

Women seem to always ruin everything in a Western. That's no different in Appaloosa. If Mrs. French (Renee Zellweger) never got off that train in Appaloosa, Marshall Virgil Cole (Ed Harris) and Deputy Everett Hitch would have had no trouble capturing, apprehending or killing renegade Randall Bragg (Jeremy Irons). But she did, and now we have a throwback Western drama. Harris wrote, directed and starred in Appaloosa. The film is slow with a lot of machismo. And of course the lonely woman who can't be without a man. Appaloosa is a pretty basic story with extraordinary cinematography. Each scene is beautifully shot, but the story lacked so much that I spent more time looking at the vistas instead of focusing on the dialog. I knew I wasn't going to miss anything. Three stars.

Renee Zellweger sucked the life right out of this movie. I think they should have cast Demi Moore instead. If it wasn't for that I would have given this movie 4 stars.

Reading some other people's comments have done the job of finally nailing the situation with the odd (read: awful) Renée Zellwegger, with her weird expressive face and semi-skillful but inauthentic borrowings from other performers. One of the least alluring actresses ever to get great success in my opinion. I always have to gulp hard to go see a movie with her in it, but have done so on occasion since she is everywhere for some reason. (I hear "Cinderella Man" is a really good movie, but it finally dawned on me, when I tried to figure out why I hadn't watched it yet, that I just don't want to see her in it.) And to be fair, someone said she was almost normal again in "New in Town," and in the clip I saw, she did look/act encouragingly life-like for a change.

Old-fashioned western
Appaloosa is a classic-style western. The story feels disjointed, but Ed Harris and Viggo Mortensen are a great dynamic duo. The western landscape is pretty, and the shots are well done.

I loved this movie. The friendship between these two men was very interesting to watch as well as encouraging. The acting was outstanding and I was truly entertained.

The town is run by a bunch of outlaws, but for some reason Renee Zellweger's character decides to move there by herself and with no money. Ed Harris' character demands that the town implements his "my word is the law" which includes him killing people for public urination and yet people that murder law enforcement men get trials.

Ed Harris' old-fashioned oater, based on a novel by Robert B. Parker, is extremely faithful to the source material, for those who care about that sort of thing, but this proves to be the film's main problem, as the book is nothing all that special to begin with. Even if it were a great book, any filmed adaptation that fails to be anything more ambitious than an abridged and censored retelling of a book (a la Ron Howard's The DaVinci Code) is bound to seem like a disappointment. If the film doesn't at least attempt to build upon or alter its source in any significant way so as to take full advantage of the medium, then why bother making it (financial reasons aside)? Still, the film at least LOOKS good. Overall, the direction is pretty impressive considering it's only Harris' second stint behind the camera. He and Viggo Mortensen are both good in their respective roles. Renee Zellwegger does her best with a pretty thankless part as Harris' trampy girlfriend and Jeremy Irons phones in yet another villain performance. Only recommended for die-hard western fans.

APPALOOSA is made like a traditional, and classic, western. Thanks to fine acting all around, the taciturn nature of Western heroes doesn't prevent lots of emotion emanating from those square jaws and ramrod-straight shoulders. The tale the movie tells builds in suspense, and the ending is not predictable, even though you think you know where it's all going. Every line and gesture rings true to life. The DVD includes, in addition to a commentary track, about five interesting featurettes about the making of the film. The sound and picture (choose to screen the widescreen version since that's how the movie was shot) are excellent, too.
