"Annie Hall" is the movie we have to thank/blame for spawning an entire genre of hideous romantic "comedies" about self-absorbed, neurotic, but otherwise well-to-do New Yorkers talking to the camera and whining to their shrinks about their oh-so-unsatisfying love-lives. A genre without which people like John Cusack, Kate Hudson, Meg Ryan, and Sandra Bullock would never have had careers. Naturally, all of the above is unforgivable, but "Annie Hall" at least has the saving grace of actually being kind of witty. It's still not really my cup of tea, as I'm not a big Woody Allen fan. If I had to choose, I'd prefer to watch one of his earlier, zanier comedies.

There's a reason Woody Allen is Woody Allen. And this film is the prime example of his genius. Allen routinely breaks the fourth wall to address the audience, and while this technique could have been annoying, it ends up being endearing and informing his character in a startlingly efective manner. The dialogue is amazing--Kevin Smith is a modern echo of vintage Allen--and the situations so real, so familiar, that one can't help but be drawn into the immediacy and relevancy of these human situations. If you ever watch only one Woody Allen movie, make it this one. But then watch another one.
