I absolutely LOVE this movie. This film is definately in my top 5. I love the relationship of the Phantom and Christine, the story line, and their singing. I also think the acting was amazing, as well! 5 stars from me! :)

An hour in, I hated this movie. There was virtually no dialogue and the songs were so abstract I had trouble relating them to a coherrent storyline. But, I hung in there and I am glad I did and for one reason- Gerard Butler. I found myself defending his Phantom when the opposing characters were calling him evil and murderous, questioning Raoul's credentials in comparison, and totally crying foul when my hero ended up alone. I mean, what is that girl thinking? This is the most tragic, romantic, handsome, complex, and magnetic protagonist since Batman. I will put this my copy and 'Moulin Rouge' and watch the both of them over and over and over again.

I'm going to start off by saying I hate musicals. But I LOVED this movie. Why did I see it if I hate musicals? Cause I told my mom I'd see it with her. I saw the preview and was intrigued by it. Never having seen the stage production, I didn't know what to expect. When Erik was leading Christine down the stairs, I was actually thinking the worst! I was afraid he was going to do "unspeakable" things to her. Boy was I ever wrong. And thank goodness. I was so drawn in by Music of the Night that I was beginning to wish I was Christine. I thought Gerry Butler's voice was so rich and powerful that I needed some chocolate afterward. His Phantom just exuded sex! I have the soundtrack and I only listen to Gerry's songs. I hardly ever watch the movie all the way through now. I watch Gerry's parts and that's it. I also couldn't help but cry at the end. I really felt for Erik. Having been a vitim of ridicule as a teenager, I understand where he's coming from. Gerry put so much emotion into that role, that at the end, I really wanted to give Erik a hug and tell him that I understood what he was going through. Emmy was great as Christine, but I wanted to slap her and shake her for choosing Raoul over Erik. Raoul is such a FOP! He's a sissy boy and a wuss. Erik may have a skin condition, but he's a much better catch than Mr. Foppy Pants. And with a voice like his...WOO! I do have to admit that I didn't like the movie the first time I saw it. It was okay. I thought it was kind of slow. I watched it a 2nd time when it came on HBO, and that's when I fell in love with it. I watched it all the time. I would like to see the stage version, but only if Gerry Butler plays Erik. He may not have the greatest voice in the world, and goodness knows he did hit a couple of flat notes, but the guy is the living embodiment of chocolate. I love listening to him sing. I hope he's able to do some singing in future films.

No, I'm not going to bust on the movie because Michael Crawford wasn't in it. Anyone who expected a Michael Crawford clone deserved to be disappointed.
My problem is strictly technical. You would think that with 21st Century technology they ought to be able to produce a movie that makes it look and
sound like the singers are actually singing "in" the setting they're playing in -- as opposed to singing in a studio and merely mouthing the words on the set. Especially since they were able to do it in the 1950s with "Carousel" and "Oklahoma"!
If that sort of thing doesn't bother you, enjoy the movie. It made me nuts!
