Nick Hornby writing is evident, and Lone Scherfig is a talented director (her Italian For Beginners is so charming and real). And while this movie is a fun, witty coming of age fairytale, it is yet another case, like with the Hurt Locker, The Queen and others, of a too awarded and buzzed title. It is not that an amazing film. So bottom line, it's recommended, but don't get your expectations too high.

Good, But A Letdown
This film is good, but most of it is far more childish than I expected. Most of its attempts at elegance come off as mere pretension. The glamour and worldliness of Jenny's new life are too plainly spelled out for the audience (Jenny: I LOVE the Pre-Raphaelites! David: [EXTRAORDINARY! How did you ever learn about one of the better-known artistic movements!?]). Jenny is the one carrying the majority of this pretension, and I am certain that her character maintains charisma by virtue of the actress and not the script. The fact that her father is overbearing and silly also helps her likeability; if she had doting parents who never criticized her, she might just be insufferable. Aside from that, the film is quite realistic, yet seems somehow silly and flat in little ways until the ending. I liked it (see every other review for why), but I was expecting something far more polished and naturally intelligent. Having been through both of the struggles Jenny deals with (still going through the college part), I really liked the ending, even though I expected it. Few people actually like the easy way out...we feel suspicious of it. We want the hard road, which feels real and personal, which is what makes it so nice that that’s the one almost all of us have to take to get anywhere.

Coming of age period pieces don't normally excite me, but after hearing how wonderful this was I decided to check it out for myself. The only problem I had with this flick was the ending. It got tied up a little too neatly. Everything else about this was wonderful. Mulligan and Molina's performances were outstanding. The movie looks terrific and for the majority of the film, the story is very engaging.

"AN EDUCATION" is an excellent and rewarding film that is off the beaten track. With little sex, no violence, and very real people, it probably has little mass commercial appeal, but it's extremely enjoyable. The basic plot involves a high-school age young woman who's discovering the wide world of art, culture, and learning, but who's stifled by her well-meaning yet stolid middle-class parents. (Hmmm...sounds like there are loads of us who can relate to that!) Into her life comes a sophisticated older man who's playful and fun and exciting. Should she set her expanding sails on him or continue working towards getting into Oxford? The plot and the characters in this film are so fresh and believable that it all surprises you, delightfully. Don't miss it.
