I can't argue that the performances were great. Even the large number of rap stars that played Denzel's brothers were fine.

I can't argue that the performances were great. Even the large number of rap stars that played Denzel's brothers were fine.
My problem with this movie is that I have seen it done before a dozen times. How many times can I see a drug lord rise to power? There are really only a couple of possible endings with these movies and this one had the boring kind.
I suggest watching Scarface or Blow instead.

PUT ASIDE YOUR EXPECTATIONS AND ENJOY AN INTELLIGENT CRIME THRILLER AND ONE OF THE BETTER FILMS OF 07. Based on a true story American Gangster has a clear story line with heros who are flawed and bad guys who are trusted by the public. Some loved this film while others felt it was overrated. I just took it for what it was and I was really tired when I watched this film. That usually means I pass out at some point. I fell asleep when the Matrix first came out but I didnt even dose off during this film. Not too much violence and blood except for the grand finale. Denzel and Crowe are at the top of there games as they usually are. The film is over two hours but went by really fast and will be remembered in 07 just like Bourne Ultimatum.

Excellent acting and a good script keeps "American Gangster" moving and interesting. I feared the worst when I realized it was 2-1/2 hours long -- but it easily held my interest right through the very end. A nice touch: the background interweaving...

Excellent acting and a good script keeps "American Gangster" moving and interesting. I feared the worst when I realized it was 2-1/2 hours long -- but it easily held my interest right through the very end. A nice touch: the background interweaving of the US's disastrous end in Vietnam with the decline and eventual fall of our lead gangster. This film tells a compelling story and in quite enjoyable; high production values keep it very watchable, too.

Ridley Scott made another masterpiece. This movie is exciting and thrilling. There are two intersecting stories. One is about an honest and fearless cop (Russell Crowe who's great here) among dirty cops, a lot like in Serpico. The other is about a rise and fall - Denzel Washington is the gangster who rose to the top, but when you draw too much attention it's never good for you... in Scarface, Tony Montana bought two white tigers and went down shortly after, here Frank Lucas's wife buys him a chinchilla coat: not a smart move. The movie also has a great score, mainly hip hop. It's a two and a half hours movie but it's so well made that you don't notice the time.
