First and foremost, this is one of the most visually stunning films I've seen in a long time - however, it's also a fairly dark and thoughtful story that will leave you with a new view of the world around you.

If you are the possessor of a simple mind or a religious zealot donýt watch this movie. The message will probably be lost on you. If you endeavor to broaden your horizons and gain new insights into the meaning of life this movie might be one you will enjoy, possibly never forget.
Kevin Spacey gives a fantastic performance as a dysfunctional middle aged, middle American trying to find some purpose or meaning in his life.
The final irony is just and left me with a feeling of peace that I seldom feel.

I think the plot comes from Hemingway's "The short, happy life of Francis Macombre(sp?)."
All the elements seem to be there. A man cowed by a shrewish, unfaithful wife. A spiritual guide who's no saint. A turning point where he becomes a more valuable person (to Hem this meant being a real man, while in AB it's being a 90's man). His life being snuffed within moments of the turning point. No regret at the murder, since he was fulfilled. "Better to have truly lived one moment than merely existed a thousand lifetimes." Sort of ex't/nih't.
AB is in burbs, book in Africa. Hunts a maiden in AB, big game in book. Etc.
Pedophiliaphobes: note fantasy breaks when it's clear she's scared. Good warning nowadays. People physically mature younger.
AB is good. There's more to a movie than plot. But picture sitting around b.s.ing about stories and how to change this or that to make it fresh/unrecognizable. OK, but give credit, if in fact Hem thought it up. Was it he who said there's only like 5 stories, all others being versions?
As to his lack of bitterness, I expect the existentialist would say the murderer meant nothing. That shining moment of self awareness in the kitchen made his whole life mean something. More new age mysticism than one would expect from Hem. No surprise, coming from Hollywood.

A must see classic!
This is a film that undoubtedly earned every award it got. Magnificent performances by Spacey and Benning, in the role of a couple in a crumbling marriage. The plot development is gripping. The movie is enjoyable on so many levels. I loved the philosophical ideas, but it's possible to enjoy the film even without delving into the more profound messages. It's a classic, and you'll enjoy seeing it even the second time.
