Immensely fun to watch. Sentimental and sweet without being cloying; surreal without being obscure; romantic without being mushy. I was a bit apprehensive: the N-Flix description makes it seem juvenile, but it is not a kids' movie in any way.

Ce film est fabuleux! If I had to sum it all up into one word, which, believe me, is no easy task, I would have to say it was, in every sense of the word, quirky. Amelie is a girl with a pleasant life. She has a steady job, a nice enough apartment, good friends and a long list of suitors (although none SUIT her, if you know what I mean.) One day, she discovers a trinket box hidden in her bathroom (behind a wall no less) and she comes to the decision that she will return it to its rightful owner. If he is happy with it, she will continue her good deeds; if not, and I quote 'tant pis!' (too bad!). Of course, there is a love story, too, a very interesting one at that, but also very sweet. Although on the surface this film sounds like a nice, fun romp through the streets of Paris (and it is), it has that underlying message that is honestly insightful. Audrey Tatou is an implausibly talented actress and she makes a fine performance as a girl who notices unhappiness all around her and decides to do something about it. Very highly recommended. 5 stars. 2/22/09

This film is about the simple pleasures of life, those few precious moments that make life a joy, and how much more life would suck without them. The filming is also simple, with color and shape — making this trip almost a fantasy. You never feel that you are in Paris, but in a more exotic place — a Paris we all dream of. It is a joy to watch how Amelie delicately handles her little secret pleasures, and the fanatastically fun-house style of filming makes it's own statement about Amelie's secrets, her loves, her sorrows...and by extension, all of ours.
