The beginning of one of the greatest series of all time. This film will always remain a classic. It is scary, influential and insanely entertaining. Not just that but Ridley Scott actually has a great sense of style and mood and he plays with that a lot, to make us shiver. There's also an interesting mystery surrounding the Alien which we know practically nothing about. Sigourney Weaver soars to heights of Super-Hero in this movie, she practically has a genera all to herself. What was really scary about the ALIEN was the Creature, this was one bad dude. What I really liked about this movie and all of the ALIEN series was the fact that RIPLEY always found a way to dispatch the Aliens. A 5.0 rating for a movie that spawned a industry.

Maybe it gets better in the second half but I was too bored by the first half to find out. I rented it because, at 28, it just seemed like a movie I SHOULD have seen already. I did the same thing with Jaws. The difference is that Jaws was awesome....

The evil corporation in this movie kind of reminds me of Netphlix. I dont usually write protest reviews, but its getting silly now. First they took away notebook and the rest- I didnt say anything. They said friend features were unpopular, which is ludicrous, but I still didnt say anything. They took away favorites, top ten lists, and any way to follow other users, yet I still remained stoic. But guess what they took away today? Apostrophes! Thats why my post looks like its written by a six year old. After the ridiculous 24 hour wait, my last review showed up with no apostrophes and I cant correct it. It wont let me. Apparently apostrophes were an unpopular feature too. Commas are probably next, followed by all the other unpopular punctuation marks. Then capital letters. I think Netphlix is going dismantle their user input one letter at a time. Eventually we will have write reviews using only the letter j, and then, one day, it will be over. Poof! I apologize for this non-review, I just cant take it anymore. Ive been thoroughly demoralized and Im lashing out.

A science fiction classic. Period. One of the best, realistic/futuristic movies ever made, along with Blade Runner. Ridley Scott started the realistic, gritty science fiction future movie with Alien. The whole spaceman/astronaut as dock worker/truck driver is a great concept that I think lets everyone relate to the characters much more.
This movie, in reality, is a great story that just happens to take place in space. No need to know anything about science or understand futuristic technologies or jargon to understand everything in this movie. Oh yeah, its also scary as hell!
I watched this movie for the first time when I was 11, fresh on the HBO circuit and I was at home, alone, at night, in the dark. Perfect! I had nightmares for months, sleeping with lights on, afraid that the Alien was going to come around the corner at any moment and bare its slick silver teeth with that hissing sound. Taunting me, daring me to sleep. This movie scared me more than Freddy or Jason ever could because I didnt want to be at camp or a sleepover, I wanted to be in space and this made space a very scary place to be.
The visuals are perfect as well. The gritty reality of hard work shows in both the design and the weathering used on the set. Looking much like a poorly lit oil rig makes for a great place for a big scary monster to hide out in. Another bit of perfection on the part of H.R.Giger (my favorite artist as well). No other space beastie has come close to the form and function of this monster.

This is a great movie. Ridley Scott did an excellent job of creating an eerie atmosphere. Seven people trapped on a ship in space being stalked by a monster with nowhere to run. Each character has their own personality and you really become attached to them. The pacing in this movie is excellent also. Your blood gets pumping. You think, no you know the alien could appear at any second and all of the sudden... it's the ships cat. The fright factor is still there and stronger than ever. One of the best sci-fi/horrors.

There are long parts of this silence, and they were too boring to have to sit through. While I can see how the Alien character has become iconic, Alien I doesn't do it justice. While the sets are great, the characters mumble too much, and it isn't scary enough. Maybe the sequels are better, I haven't seen them yet, but I doubt it.

Unfortunately, if you're just now coming to this film, you've already seen all it's tricks in the copycats that came afterward (and are still coming). If you want to be excited by the Alien saga, go straight to the second and third films, with a stop at this movie, to pay homage.
