I initially gave this 2 stars, simply because I saw in in the theatre when it came out and was very disappointed. In hindsight, and after watching the special cut with all the segments reassembled into the movie, I think I was overly harsh in my previous rating. I think it doesn't live up to the likes of Alien 1 or 2, but it does have its own feel. Overall, the assembled cut builds better tension and a feel for the characters and their religion. Overall though, the movie still could have come up with a better ending, which still doesn't satisfy me. However, the rest is a definite improvement over the theatrical release.

Unexpectedly, this turns out to be the best film of the Alien Quadrilogy. What the others lack is the feeling that they are whole movies. '3' sees all essential elements happening: character development, genuine peril, a metered and paced three-act story arc, a satisfying denouement with a reasonable coda, humor, terror, love. This is an actual movie, and I found it completely satisfying. This is not to say that I dislike the first two films, or the fourth one; they're just not as well made as '3' and hence, they are less well-rounded viewing experiences.

Gross but still awesome
Alien 3 is pretty gruesome, but most of all depressing. Only one alien, only a few loser prisoners on a prison planet, and a tragedy at the end of it all. Yet still, it does the impossible and gives us a decent sequel that is original. 4 out of 5...

Bleak and atmospheric survival sequel in a prison planet as a part of the Alien saga.
It's 1992. Director David Fincher (acclaimelly known for Se7en and Fight Club) after a few video clips, has made his debut film with Alien³. The story of Ellen Ripley is back for another chapter in the Alien saga. This time she awakes in a secured prison planet known by the name of Fiorina 161. While the Alien is lurking everywhere and killing inmates, Ripley realizes it is not her main and only concern, since some of the living inmates are also rapists and murderers, who will stop at nothing when they are finally introduced to a female after years of isolation. Fincher here has creates tension which is beyond the Alien, it is the tension of humans tearing at each other to shreds at the first signs of danger. He sucessfuly shows through his claustrophobic notions, that humans can be more dangerous then the Alien threat itself.
