This movie really surprised me and gave me a newfound respect for both Jessie Eisenberg and Kristen Stewart. I've seen the Social Network, but it took until now to understand why so many people were talking about this guy as a talented up and coming actor - he added a considerable amount of nuance to what I assumed was going to be a bad Superbad ripoff. Fantastic supporting cast all around as well.

Adventureland, 2009
This is a coming of age story about an 18 year old boy. He is ready to go to Princeton with his friends, but due to financial difficulty he has to go work at the theme park 'Adventureland'. There he discovers a different side of himself. He meets very different friends and a very different girl.
The film is set in the 80's and it really tries to create the right ambiance with the music. Music is plays an important role in this film and there is some great old music in there.
There isn't much comedy, but more comedy would have broken the mood of the film. This is more of a serious film, that tries to convey some of the emotions the characters feel.
In conclusion: it is a good film, but don't watch it for the comedy or you will be disappointed.

I did not laugh. I was not moved. The acting and direction is decent for the most part but who cares? I didn't.

The movie is funny in a quiet, intelligent way. Its a 180 degree spin awat from the type of comedy that was "Superbad". Its also a more realistic portrayal of relationships and dynamics between people thats often missing from formulaic hollywood movies. No big speech/monologue for the hero to make everything right. No cliche scene where everybody claps for the underdog and all is made right in this single act.
Anyone who has had a summer job where the employees fraternize when they aren't working will relate to this time in your 20s when the future is uncertain and you're not really sure of yourself either. A story about how your worse summer ever, ends up also being your most transformative.

I have been waiting for a really good coming of age movie since I was 15 years old. Adventureland is that movie. Greg Mottola proved his ability to capture young adult life with his direction of Superbad. He wrote and directed Adventureland and once again, doesn't miss. It isn't another Superbad, though. This film has true heart. The set-up could have walked down the cliched path, but Mottola quickly shows us more. It is 1987. James Brennan (Jesse Eisenberg) is home after college graduation. He is a virgin, not because he hasn't had chances, but because he wants to be in love. He wants to go with his friend to Europe, but his father lost his job and doesn't have the money to send him. James also wants to go to Columbia grad school. Again, the family can't afford the cost. He has to get a summer job. After several failed interviews, his only option is to be a game attendant at Adventureland, a small summer theme park in Pittsburgh. There he meets Bobby (Martin Starr), a fellow employee and future friend. He meets Mike Connell (Ryan Reynolds), a mechanic and part-time musician. James notices Em (Kristen Stewart) the first day, and they have a mutual attraction. We all know where this goes. Hormones and inexperience ravage kids. Adventureland captures it perfectly. Early on we we see James and Em kiss. We also see Em's secret affair with Conell. And so the conflict is established. Young adults have a way to really make a mess of things. Mottola creates an original story that is funny, heartwarming, gripping and, most importantly, real. Do you remember those careless summers, staring at the boy or girl across the pool? I do. I remember the subtle cues for a kiss, the brief glances, a brush of the hand, a smirk and a laugh. I also remember the heartache. It's all in Adventureland. tinyurl.com/c835qb

Genre-bending
A coming-of-age romantic comedy that isn't really comedy at all. A decent film with many plot gaps, but with performances that make up for it.

A disappointingly unfunny but still watchable follow-up to director Mottola's 2007 hit Superbad, Adventureland is essentially a coming-of-age story about a nice guy trying to get laid for the first time, just like Superbad, but without Seth Rogen's brand of raunchy humor. Also it's set in the '80s for some reason. You can tell because an awful '80s song is always playing in the background and because some of the characters have dorky clothes and hairstyles. Jesse Eisenberg does a decent job in a role traditionally written for Michael Cera, since after all they're basically the same guy, except Eisenberg has a jew-fro and a thicker neck. His dream girl is played by the adorably sullen Kristen Stewart who bites her lip and fiddles with her hair through yet another role. SNL's Bill Hader and Kristen Wiig also pop up now and again (as they invariably do in every comedy made these days) to provide the film's few laughs. Overall, I'm just thankful that Adventureland didn't dampen my confidence in Mottola's ability to score with his next effort, Paul, written by and starring the great Simon Pegg and Nick Frost, but if you must see a film featuring Jesse Eisenberg in an amusement park this year, I recommend Zombieland instead.

I'm still trying to figure out as to why this is considered a comedy? It seems to be more of a coming of age movie for college graduates than something to laugh at. Just my copper.
