Adaptation
A quirky, oddball of a film, that's one of a kind.

Quirky with top notch acting.
Adaptation centres around the real life renowned screenwriter Charlie Kaufman played by Nicolas Cage, has writers block and has to write an Adapted screenplay for a book about flowers. No matter what he thinks of, nothing is coming down on paper and his twin brother who is presumably a hopeless writer and someone who isn't very intelligent manages to begin writing and get a steady girlfriend when Charlie is in a slump. The film also is based on the real journalist (played by Meryl Streep) interviewing a very intelligent biologist who in his appearance looks like a toothless hillbilly (played by Chris Cooper).
The film that really struck me was its humour. The fact that it is a drama with some pretty big name actors (well, back when Nicolas Cage's movies were good and he wasn't a money grubbing prick) and yet it was absolutely hilarious. Charlie Kaufman is certainly a brilliant writer, his films are very well structured and also all of them are incredibly unique. Being John Malkovich and Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind are both very strange and have unique plots and of course does Adaptation.
The cast is great, the direction, lighting, acting, cinematography and the whole thing. Not only is this in my opinion Nicolas Cage's best performance, Chris Cooper was excellent also went to big lengths for his role, he got all of his front teeth removed! Now that's someone who really sacrifices themselves for their work and rightfully so as he was critically acclaimed for his performance, and went on to win the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor.
If you haven't seen this i would certainly recommend it as it's funny, not to long and is a nice movie to relax to. Definite Must See.

Adaptation is a manic mind-twister, darkly comic, and there's nothing else quite like it. One of the best films of the decade, one of my favorite films period.

What would be the best way to make a movie about flowers? Well you would have to insert yourself, because you can't make a movie "all" about flowers. And that's what happens in Adaptation, a screenplay writer puts himself into his screenplay. Now you have a story about someone writting a story, but that takes too much away from the flowers, so what to do next? Well you would make the movie more about screenplays, right? This film is filled whit all these confusing troubles, and at the end you are given a lesson on screenplays when you should have learned about flowers. That makes this one hell of a funny movie full of satire.

If you're not a big movie dork, you probably haven't heard of Charlie Kauffman. But he is a very exciting and interesting figure. As far as I know, he is probably the only screenwriter to be more famous than the people who direct his movies
and he is just a screenwriter. He is not a novelist, he is not a director, he is not an actor. (OK, he is directing his next movie, but it isn't out yet) The dude just writes movies, but to a subset of culture followers, he is as famous as Steven Spielberg.
His career is still just starting. Adaptation was the third film he wrote, and it remains his most ambitious: the film actually is an adaptation of a novel ('The Orchid Thief' by Susan Orlean), but it is also about the screenwriter who is attempting to adapt the novel into a screenplay. Get that? Kauffman fused the story of the book with the story of himself adapting the book into a screenplay. Not only that, but the main character (played amazingly by Nicolas Cage) is named Charlie Kauffman. Nicolas Cage also plays Charlie's twin brother Donald, even though in real life Charlie Kauffman does not have a twin brother at all.
It sounds confusing—and to an extent, it is—but it also mighty work, and it must be seen to be understood. Everything comes into clear focus if you view this film primarily as a screenplay; performances and the way it is filmed are secondary (although also quite important). And it is not just about adapting one work of art into another. As you watch, be on the lookout for other examples of 'adaptation' in the plot and characters. Kauffman hasn't created just another self-aware Post Modern self-congratulatory work here (although it is all those things); it is also an exploration of how all things change, what happens to them when they do change
and what happens to them when they don't.

A story in a story in a story. At some point you feel lost, but when everything comes together it hits you right in the face! Superb acting, I honestly think Cooper deserved the Oscar for this one. The movie challenges itself and wins. Who'd think a movie about orchids could be interesting? Don't miss this.

a movie the cinema needed...
There are many pictures each year that you just watch. you might even smile now and then, but they just run past. few movies actually stay with u and even fewer are the ones you can't picture the cinema world without - Psycho, Pulp Fiction, Casablanca and a few more. Adaptation fits that group. Not that it's a classic, but just that it's so unique, so rare that the cinema world just had to have it. from the first few seconds when you hear our hero's thoughts you just get sucked into his world - and it's such a common world, with such ridiculous thoughts that every one of us has every day. Cage is great as the two opposite brothers, Meryl is also wonderful and Chris Cooper - he gives a perfomance of a lifetime. The script is the real icing here, it's unbelievably honest and original. it'll make you laugh, it'll make you cry, it'll make you think...
