It's not complete crap as interpretations of "I want you", "Strawberry fields" and "Because" were really interesting and untypical. But the rest of the movie...

It would've been better if some of the songs weren't so "thrown in".
An alright movie I guess

First off let me say I absolutely hate musicals! I hate having to keep up with the dialouge and music and trying to put two and two together... I love love loved Across the Universe! You don't need to keep up with the music since there isn't much conversation said in the songs, just songs that many grew up listening to. I watched this movie almost everyday the first two weeks it came out. The soundtrack is amazing and so is the cast.. Jim Sturgess definitely did not hurt. Watch this!

Are you a fan of Beatles music? Do you enjoy Baz Luhrmans visual spectacle mixed with dramatic singing and dancing? If so, youd fit right at home with Across the Universe. By the opening songs, I was honestly hooked in, fully immersed into their rendition of Hold me Tight and All My Loving. With each new plot development, I looked forward to guessing which song would be used and how it would be adapted for the film, and I wasnt disappointed
until the middle of the film. Unfortunately, the films emotional connection weakens at about the half way point as the storytelling becomes muddled with unnecessarily obscure visuals and dangling plot threads that feel unneeded or dont get resolved at all. Still, the movie works on many levels despite its emotional drop towards the end.

Three stars for the great music and imaginative visuals. If the moviemakers would have just put a little more effort into the story rather than shoehorning Beatle tunes into a paint by numbers take of the '60s, this movie could have really been something. It had all the elements except a worthy story. Beatles fans should like it - I did - but it should have been better.

Well shot and acted. However, the Beatles songs have never sounded so overly produced and poorly re-imagined.

Most of the dialog is stunningly bad and delivered like players in a high school production of "The Crucible." The far too numerous characters range from drifting as nonentities to being absolutely unlikeable. Prudence in particular seems to exist expressly for the purpose of lusting after every woman that crosses her path and then eventually having everyone sing her namesake song to her in a moment that made me actively wince. And apparently the biggest effect Vietnam has on Max is that it makes him grow a mustache. However, some of the sequences are truly wonderful to behold, and I think the more the movie ventured into abstraction the better it got - particularly when nobody in the cast was talking. Shame that in between "wow" moments we must grapple with the cornmeal plot and acting.

Startlingly hated by a few, this is a brilliant (and unjustly slighted) re-imagining of what it meant to be a young and alive person in the United States (and England) in 1968. But not much need for drugs or other delusions here. I am tempted to almost say that it practically reinvents the term "movie musical" -- although with some nods, it is true, to its predecessors. But it is nothing like the boring voyage through embarrassing nostalgia I feared it could be, and a couple of people had told me they almost hated it, so I was hesitant. But using nothing more than classic Beatles songs and just enough dialogue to create a real and strong continuity of narrative, these film artists re-present (and represent) a time and outlook with great summary skill. A remarkable cast of talented young actors, terrific art direction, and an amazing set of visual montages add up to a remarkable movie. Don't think of it as a musical. It is a seamless collage of 21st century sensibilities faithfully but creatively bringing another time alive. It is a terrific plumbing of both the crazy depths of 60s anguish and confusions, as well as the history-making turn in values--and joyful discoveries. The strong sense of the filmmakers' style seldom overwhelms the underlying values. And the songs themselves of John Lennon, Paul McCartney and George Harrison seem more timeless than ever. (At the beginning of the movie, I even thought it was set in present-time and of course, in a sense, it is.) Don't watch "Rent." Don't even watch "Hair." Or at least watch this first, and let your soul grow. 1.09 _____PS On the issues of pastiche, storyline, seriousness, and related topics, revisit the Beatles' own 1968 "Yelllow Submarine." Very different, but it is, by the way, still remarkably fresh---and full of eye-popping color. Yes, I know----it is a semi-Beatles movie at one remove, sort of like the one above, but in a different way.

This movie would only get 2 stars, if not for: 1. Eddie Izzard's Mr. Kite scene, 2. The scene with 5 Salma Hayeks, and 3. Bono as Ken Kesey. Unfortunately, there's a whole lot of boring plot to get through between those three scenes. This is clearly a case of Julie Taymor having several different ideas for scenes, that she had to somehow shoehorn into the same plot. It doesn't work out very well, and there are many very abrupt transitions (or lack thereof). Here's some advice for Taymor: Next time, do not go where the BeeGees have gone before.
