Summary of Absence of the Good
After the death of his only child, Homicide Detective Caleb Barnes is haunted by nightmares and visions of the boy, upsetting both his home and professional lives. While his wife's sorrow spirals further downward, he finds the chance for redemption in the pursuit of a killer whose diverse and seemingly random victims include an elderly couple, a waitress, and a drug addict. As the victims multiply, Caleb's problems at home and compulsions at work merge into one terrifying and indistinguishable whole.
