She keeps on adding to her Iconic luster in every movie she stars in. Audrey Tautou is just a force of nature. This is a sprawling epic movie. Storytelling at it's best. The acting and the script is magnificent, the photography is glorious. And surprise, Jodie Foster has a supporting role in this movie, and of course she is just fantastic. I liked this movie very much, and I recommend it.

Truly a nice film. Jeunet's characteristic aesthetic fits this period and this story well, a fact which is only complemented by the well-chosen locations and costuming. Furthermore, Audrey Tautou carries off the childlike innocence and near-naive stubbornness of her character as well as any actress could. I also liked the structure of the film--it seems almost picaresque but in reverse, so that even as Tautou travels, the road almost seems to come to her. And this film certainly nails the brutality of war, particularly the sheer senselessness of WWI. I am no great fan of romances, but this film won't bore you and it has some elements that set it apart from other romances, so I think four stars are merited.

A Very Long Engagement from director Jean-Pierre Jeunet (Amelie, Alien Resurrection) is an interesting mix of genres. It's part war movie, part love story, with a bit of humor and mystery thrown in for fun. The story unfolds piece by piece, moving from past to present and back. The characters are colorful and eclectic. Jeunet's direction is unbelievably sure-footed and his visual style is almost a character by itself. Put simply, A Very Long Engagement is a masterpiece.
Jeunet's direction and cinematography gives the viewer some amazing views of France during this time period. The visuals are almost fairy-tale-like, but simultaneously incredibly realistic. While stories like the one told in A Very Long Engagement are incredibly unlikely, the plot unfolds in a manner that lets the viewer forget about that fact. The layers of the story peel back, revealing new characters or showing past ones in a different light. It's all totally engrossing and an absolute pleasure to watch. It's not often that a movie glues me to my seat like A Very Long Engagement did.
A Very Long Engagement is a film that I could recommend to almost anyone. It really has something for everyone, except young children. While the war scenes are fantastic, it's not really a war movie. The love story is emotional and moving, but the movie is a lot more than that. The humor is great, but it is certainly not a comedy. As you watch the story unfold, it might seem like a mystery. A Very Long Engagement seems almost like a poem set on film. Highly recommended.

I really don't know how to explain why I love Jeunet's movies so much, but "genius" keeps popping up. I guess I could describe them as using every last little millisecond of sensory bandwidth to envelop, immerse, stimulate, and tease the viewer into Jeunet's experience. I can't think of anything that compares to them. Although it's been decades since I've seen a Fellini film, I guess his films would be comparable, but I don't remember being drawn into Fellini's films emotionally like I am when viewing Jeunet's films. I remember *watching* Fellini's films, but I remember *experiencing* Jeunet's films.

10/10Must See
I'm kind of a sucker for gorgeous cinematography, and this film has it in spades, which is exactly what I've come to expect in a Jeunet picture. He's fast becoming a favorite director of mine. I've seen three of his films now (four, if you count that crapfest, Alien: Resurrection, which I can't believe he was even associated with), and I think this one is my new favorite. It's less quirky and more moving than his other works. Not that I don't like quirkiness, it's just that small doses of it can go a long way, and I think AVLE contains just the right amount for a film with such heavy subject matter. I liked that Jeunet never allows the picture to get too sappy or maudlin, which it so easily could have done with someone else at the helm. In the hands of any other director, this could have ended up being just another pointless, tear-jerking chick-flick, but Jeunet infuses it with just the right balance of heart, humor, horrors (of war, that is), and astounding visuals. Watching it is enough to make you want to up and go to France (circa 1920, preferably, despite all of the recently war-torn misery). The story is more than a little far-fetched at times, but somehow that touch of unbelievability works nicely within Jeunet's surreal, fantasy-world style of film-making. It makes me wonder what this guy, if given the chance, could do with the Harry Potter franchise.

Probably my favorite Jeunet film, this is an entrancing, gorgeous film that depicts wartime romance with a sad desperation rather than an unrealistic idealism.
