A Star Is Born, 1954

Judy Garland works her a** off to just barely save this film from mediocrity. She alone bears the burden of all the singing and throws herself completely into her dramatic scenes. (Her rendition of "The Man That Got Away" near the beginning is marvelous - but of course you can save yourself three hours and watch it on Youtube). James Mason also has some fine moments, especially his final scene before he takes a dip in the ocean. It is ultimately an awkward blend of MGM musical and melodrama. I saw a re-constructed version of the film which included some missing scenes and made me wonder if the people responsible did not actually do a disservice to the film by slowing down the pace.
