Sergio Leone might have known a thing or two about film-making, but he clearly didn't know squat about guns or gunfighting. Though the action in this film was often hard to swallow, it was still a pretty gripping tale that was beautifully photographed, so I can't pick on it too much. I also like Clint's character throughout this "Man With No Name" trilogy. He wasn't your typical quiet western tough guy. Sure he was tough and didn't say much, but he was also extremely clever and had a sense of humor. Also, he was motivated mostly by greed, rather than some personal code of honor. At the time, this was pretty unusual for a western "hero". Which isn't to say he didn't have some sense of morality. If he didn't, we wouldn't root for him. He punished the bad and protected the good all right, he just wasn't about to do it for free. Hence the title, I guess.
