FAQs

What's my Entertainment Personality?

Your Entertainment Personality is a one-of-a-kind model of your taste. We hope you'll find it both recognizable and surprising; a channel to discovering new movies and TV shows you'll love.

Your Entertainment Personality is also the basis for your recommendations and for comparing your taste to other Jinni users. Jinni generates and continually adjusts your Entertainment Personality based on your ratings, preferences, and other actions on the website.

Can I watch videos on Jinni?

Yes, we do stream some titles. Select the "Free Online" tab above the search box to get results only in movies, TV shows and shorts that are available to watch online for free.

Our aim at Jinni is to provide a one-stop service where you can find what you want to watch, then get linked to however you'd like to watch it - whether that's streaming, download, rental, or purchase. We're constantly adding to our list of "Watch It" options (within legal limits).

Do I have to pay to use Jinni?

No, an account on Jinni is completely free!

In future we might offer premium accounts for a fee.

Can I add a missing title?

We're working on expanding our catalog all the time, and title requests are welcome here.

Because we index each title extensively by plot, mood, style, setting, etc., just adding a new title wouldn't really make it search-able or recommend-able in our system. We plan to add more features for users to contribute actively to building both the catalog and the Movie Genome.

What if I think a certain gene doesn't fit the movie or show?

Searched for "Shoot em up" and got Pretty Woman? We hope not. But if you see something that doesn't look right, you can click through to the page for that movie or show. The "Vote on this title" sidebar has a list of genes that Jinni assigned to it. Click on a gene to vote on whether it's a good fit or not - and help advance the Movie Genome project!

Why are the images in the search results different sizes?

The images in the collage are sized by relevance. So the first page of results shows the most relevant titles, from biggest (most relevant) to smallest. Open the "Size By" menu below the search box if you'd like to see results sized by Date, Length, or Rating.

Why do my results show movies I've already rated?

For now, search results on Jinni show the most relevant titles, and don't take into account your ratings and preferences. In future, we plan to add options to customize your searches.

I rated lots more movies and my recommendations didn't change.

You get more recommendations once each day you sign into Jinni. Check back tomorrow to see the effects of your extra ratings.

Why don't I see Your Match for this title?

Once you rate 10 titles, Jinni begins to predict Your Match for others (that is, how much we think you'll like them). Sometimes we can't predict how a certain movie or show fits your taste even after you've rated 10 titles, if it's very different from the ones you've rated. Keep rating titles and we'll be able to make predictions all the time.

What are the social features on Jinni?

If you invite someone to Jinni or they invited you, you'll be automatically following each other. You can also find people to follow from your "Neighbors" (people with compatible taste in movies and shows) - or if a friend gives you the link to their public user page. We're planning to add people search soon. We see Jinni not as a social network, but rather as a place to find what to watch. You can see opinions and actions from people you're following on your Recommendations and Pulse pages, all in the interest of helping you choose what to watch next. You can change your participation in the Jinni community from the Settings section in your Profile.

How do I close my account on Jinni?
